Day 3. Milan. Another city day.

It was a pretty nice day again in Milan. Partly sunny with some spits of rain in the afternoon but good for walking in the city.

We had a quick breakfast and then headed downtown with Maite on the bus and Metro. We're old hands now.

We went first to the church of Santa Maria delle Grazie where da Vinci's famous Last Supper painting is. We didn't have tickets to that (the waiting list is months long) but we went into the church itself. Very interesting changes in style inside and although much smaller than the main Duomo a few blocks away it was worth seeing.

We then wandered around the older parts of the city. The streets are very narrow and we were glad to have someone with a map (on her phone) that showed where we were. We saw the church of St. Ambrosia&amp (379AD)(wedding in progress) and a war memorial.

We came out in the banking and financial district which is a few blocks from the Duomo and proceeded to the Castello Sforzeaco.  This is a really impressive fortress home for the Sforza family starting in 1450.  The castle and gardens cover 30 ha so it is very big (and beautiful).  It was also popular for weddings.

After a stroll thru the park we had a nice lunch outdoors near the Arco della Pace (Peace Arch) .
Maite went off to do her own thing in the afternoon while we headed for the the Milan Academy of Fine Art and part of the University of Milan. We saw a staggering number of old masters paintings representing mainly religious topics.  Some of the canvases were huge!  And the colours were so bright. Amazing.

One thing we noticed in the art gallery as well as the botanical gardens we went through at the university was the support of the local Rotary clubs and Inner Wheel groups  for restoration and maintenance work of many items.

We windowshopped up Corso Giuseppe Garibaldi (very interesting shops) and then caught the trains home.  Our feet were tired so we bought some snacks and with a bottle of wine put our feet up and stayed in for the evening.  Have to pace ourselves.
