Day 2: City day in Milan

We must have been more tired than we thought because it was almost noon before we were out of the house this morning and on our way downtown for a day by ourselves.  Maite was working so we braved the public transport system, bought day passes and rode the Metro (subway) to the central square in the city. Easy. For 4.5 euros you can go anywhere in the city for 24 hours. It was straight forward once you figured out the route.
The Milan Cathedral is the fantastic ornate church on one side of the Piazza del Duomo. On the other side is the famous Galleria Vittorio Emanuele. If you have ever been to West Edmonton Mall and seen Europa,  Galleria is the model.  It was way ahead of its time as a mall when it was built in1865 and the stores are all very high end like Prada, Gucci, Vuitton  It's a world wide attraction.
We had a great lunch at Zucca and people watched for an hour or two and then visited the Duomo. Pictures don't do it justice. It is massive and fantastically carved in marble. We visited the inside and the took the trip to the roof for a great view of the city. We opted for the elevator as the 250 stairs would have done us in!
The crowds built during the day but we had no problem getting to anything we wanted to see. The lineup for gelato was the only wait we had.
The metro ride home seemed to take less time than the trip in but by now we were experts and it likely just seemed that way.
Maite and her mom took us for supper at a really nice restaurant called Osteria De' Binan. We asked them to order some authentic dishes as Italians would.  It was wonderful. Great company.
The city is busy all the time but never overwhelming and its nickname of New York of Europe is well deserved. The architecture and culture alone make it a great place to visit. We have more exploring to do on the weekend, this time with an experienced guide.
